The last thing that usually happens (I'm writing what would the usual course of action together with the usual last step of this course of action be as you didn't provide us with any list) is that the neurotransmitter that gets released (in this case it's Acetylcholine - Ach) gets taken again up from the synaptic cleft in the synaptic terminal where it then waits for another action potential to be released again.
