Rome fought Carthage in the First Punic War over the island of b)Sicily. The Romans essentially wanted to expel the Carthaginians from Sicily. However, they were not victorious at first, they needed to go through the Second and the Third Punic Wars to finally destroy Carthage and for the Romans and Sicilians to remain on the island.
