What was the primary reason that the north developed an economy increasingly based on manufacturing while the south continued to rely more on an agricultural based economy

The climate in the south is optimum for growing crops year round, due to the four distinct growing seasons, and the fact that the south doesn't experience temperatures below freezing. Whereas, in the north, most crops can only be grown from late spring to early fall, due to temperatures below zero freezing crops in the winter. Hope that helps!
