Harriet Beecher was an abolitionist, that is, she opposed slavery and was in favour of abolishing slavery.

Her book depicted the life of slaves in a way that induced sympathy and stressed the non-Christian character of owning slaves. She wanted to convince people to abolish slavery using the influence of her book.
