it was similar because  they both arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic mass.

Answer: Elements arranged in atomic weights.

Explanation: Mendeleev arranged all the elements of the periodic table according to their atomic weights.

Newlands Octaves law also explained that when elements were arranged according to the atomic weights, chemical and physical properties do repeat some kind of trend.

Thus they both worked in arranging the elements in the periodic table considering only the atomic weights as the fundamental and basic property.
