Different words have different uses, but every word in the English language has at least one defined use,he's wrong ^^

I think That statement is true. There is definitely a word that not really required in a sentence and only exist to give a more proper punctuation but won't change the meaning of the sentence if it's taken away. One example of that type of word is 'the'
