Why did some southern states begin to talk about secession

Southern Slave States wanted slavery in new territories would eventually become slave states and send pro-slavery Senators and Representatives to Congress. Although many Southern Slave States had been talking about secession for some time since the slavery issue wasn't going away, it was the election of Lincoln that made them take it seriously since he was openly against slavery.

Some southern states began to talk about secession because it became clear that Lincoln might become president, and he was an open opponent to slavery, which was the driving force of the South's economy.
