What assumptions about Native Americans did sympathetic easterners make when proposing improvements on the reservations?

One assumption that was made about Native Americans by easterners during this time was that if they were not given land they would be forced off their existing land and surely die. Another was that without the improvements the Indians would resort to crime and violence.
