Napoleon had to deal with forces both inside and outside the French Empire. In your judgment, which area was more important to control?

In retrospect it was far more important for Napoleon to secure the areas he had already conquered rather than driving all his forces forward until he strained his resources. Napoleon's lack of patience and refusal to keep his forces in previously conquered nations, especially the German states and Austria, there for a few extra years as an occupation force meant that when his army was defeated in Russia, his empire quickly collapsed because the conquered nations rose back up like nothing ever happened and reduced France to its former borders.
