The first step in the reunification of East and West Germany was uniting their populations. This means that the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was reunited with the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). The cities also bridged with the capital Berlin, so Berlin was no longer split between West Berlin and East Berlin. This was seen as very beneficial and many people were happy with this process, and many remember it with emotion.
