past; passed is the verb form; pass is also a verb form and a noun

Past is being used as a preposition in this sentence. A preposition expresses relation to another thing. Passed would be used as a verb. If we wanted passed to be right, we would hav to say something like, "I passed him in the mall and I didn't realize it."
