Columbus gained an audience with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain and was able to convince them to fund his voyage around the world.
Ferdinand and Isabella would grant him three ships and funds to sail across the Atlantic, and would make Columbus governor of all of the land he claimed for Spain. In return, Columbus had to, well, claim land for Spain!
