I believe that the guy who wrote the other answer is wrong. I believe it is a. This is a dash: "Well, what happened was-" Batman began. This is a hyphen: non-hyphenated. See how non-hyphenated combines words?

I would say c. Here's an example:

"Hey! You're not supposed to do-" the guard said before he was taken out by Batman.
