Why were settlers in Rhode Island free to worship as they saw fit?

Roger Williams was the founder of Rhode Island. He was a very religious leader who arrived in Boston from England. Williams, with help from the Narragansett tribe, established a settlement at the base of two rivers near Narragansett Bay, present day Rhode Island which was declared a place of religious freedom.
