Not only did they plant crops in the fertile river banks, but they built complex irrigation systems that carried the water from the river to crops farther away. Made use of the extra water. Furthermore, the Nile carried nutrients in soil & silt that were deposited during yearly floods and those nutrients fertilized the crops.
