A brownie recipe asks for one and one third times as much sugar as chocolate chips. If three and one half cups of sugar is used, what quantity of chocolate chips would then be needed, according to the recipe?

Answer: Hello there!

If s is the quantity of sugar, and c is the quantity of chocolate chips, then:

"you need one and on third times as much sugar as chocolate chips"

This can be written as: s = (1 + 1/3)*c = (4/3)*c

If s is 3 +1/2 cups then

s = (3 + 1/2) cups = (6/2 + 1/2) cups = 7/2 cups.

replacing it in the first equation we got:

s = 7/2 cups = (4/3)*c

c = (7/2)(3/4) cups = 21/8 cups = (16 + 5)/8 cups = 2 + 5/8 cups.

So 2 and 5/8 cups of chocolate chips would be needed.

1 and 1/3 = 4/33 and 1/2 = 7/2ratio:4/3/1=7/2/x
x=7/2∗3/4=21/8
21/8 = 2 and 5/8
