How do you change a mixed number into an improper fraction?

by multiplying the whole number by the denominator plus the numerator over the denominator
example
1 1\2=1 x 2 +1=3\2

times the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator, then put this result above the denominator. a*(b/c) --> ((a*c)+b)/c
