Mitosis is a type of cell division in which two daughter cells are produced from a cell. It is observed in the somatic cells of the body and is responsible for growth.

It can be divided into four stages called the prophase, metaphase, anaphase and the telophase. In the early stages of mitosis, the chromosomes start to condense. The nucleolus and the nuclear membrane then disappear. As the nuclear envelop disintegrates, the microtubules invade the nuclear space and attach to the chromosomal kinetochores. The chromosomes are then aligned on the metaphase plate or the equatorial plane.
