Mexicans are less concerned with the external world and more concerned with the state of its soul. Mexicans are combined with Indian's fatalism and the proud self-assertion of the Spaniards to provide a conception in which the individual must assert himself by struggling against an arbitrary external reality though the odds are heavily against him. These psychological characteristics become of political relevance in shaping the Mexican's understanding of national history.
