Minerals can be described by various physical properties that are related to their chemical structure and composition. The most common characteristics that identify them are crystalline structure and habit, hardness, luster, diaphaneity, color, scratch, tenacity, exfoliation, fracture, partition and relative density. Other more specific tests for the characterization of certain minerals are magnetism, taste or smell, radioactivity and reaction to strong acids.
