What did they mean when they stated that women "were supposed to be happy housewives that stayed at home while "the Men" went to work? How were women "happy"?

And old statement where the woman would be at home making dinner watching the kids and do chores while the me “worked really hard at work” they meant that a woman back then would be happier at home than working which I doubt
