The reason coral reefs are so diverse because they have a complex system which traps even a small inch of sunlight and use it to produce nutrients that are essential for them.

They secrete calcium carbonate and are known to be having the most diverse group of species that is present any where else.

They provide food and shelter to the organism living there and protects the sea shore from high currents and storms.
