The decimal point always has to be between two numbers that are between 1-10. (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9)

Then to figure out which number is the exponent count the number of places from where the decimal originally was to the new place of the decimal.

Originally the decimal was after the final 0
5100000.

Now it is between the 5 and 1

5.1

From the end of the 0's to between the 5 and 1 there are 6 places (in between each other number); so the exponent is 6

5.1×10⁶

5,100,000 in scientific notation is 5.1 x 10^6 (ten to the sixth power).
