One of the main reasons social media has become so popular is the fact that it is so interactive. It allows almost everyone to participate in the exchange of information. New media tends to follow this pattern by being interactive, and allowing the audience to participate constantly. As more and more normal people participate, the message also becomes more relatable, which is something that did not occurred as often in other types of media.
