Correct answer: Sodium and potassium ions

In the neurons, potassium ions are in high concentration within the cell, and sodium ions are in higher concentration outside the cell. the cell has a sodium and potassium leakage channel that allow diffusion of sodium and potassium ion down the concentration gradient.

the neurons have more potassium leakage channel as compared to sodium leakage channel. Hence, the potassium leaks more rapidly out of the cell as compared to sodium leaks inside the cell. These action of the sodium-potassium pump maintain the resting potential.
