Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. ... When the rocks break, the earthquake happens.
Most earthquakes occur along the edge of the oceanic, continental plates, and around the Ring of Fire.

Earthquakes happen all over the world, but they happen where fault lines are. Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates sliding and rubbing/crashing into one another.
