Bret’s uncle owns a square of land that is 10 miles long on each side. is that the same as 10 mi2?

No it's not the same.

First of all, miles is used for length while mi2 is used for Area.

Second, if the length of each side is 10 miles , the total area would be 10 x 10 = 100 mi2
