What is the difference between a criminal case and a civil case?

A criminal case is a case in which a person is accused of breaking the law while a civil case is a case involving a dispute between two or more people. Examples of criminal cases include murder, assault, grand theft auto, robbery, drug possession. Examples of civil cases include suing a neighbor or business, as well as child custody or divorce cases.
