England had a depressed economy, with unemployment, and a growing population. England wanted to find riches and relive the cities of terrific unemployment. In 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh petitioned for a commission in his name to send people to the new world. An expedition of 117 men, women, and children settled Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina.
