Elimination Method

-5x - 8y = 17 (×2)
2x - 7y = -17 (×5)

-10x - 16y = 34
10x - 35y = -85
____________
-51y = -51
y = 1

-5x - 8(1) = 17
-5x - 8 = 17
-5x = 17 + 8
-5x = 35
x = -7

(-7, 1)

−5x − 8y = 17 2x − 7y = −17
