Why did the delegates decide not to revise the articles of confederation?

The Philadelphia Convention got underway with a decision to throw out the Articles of Confederation This decision was in direct opposition to the orders to revise the Articles. However, it allowed the delegates to shift the powers away from the existing government and begin drafting the US Constitution.
