The advances in terms of technology during the Industrial revolution caused an increase in the need for more raw materials which lead to the European to look for new colonies. Also, the colonies provided captive markets for manufactured goods. Hope this helps.

The two ways are:

- The advancement in new technologies lead to the increasing need for new materials
(because of this, many europeans look for colonies where they could obtain vast amount of natural resources at a relatively low price)

- the colonies provided captive markets for manufactured goods
(The colonies also serve as potential costumers for the Europeans to sell their product, since new technology allow them to provide the products in better quality/quantity)
