It was mostly to escape religious persecution. The puritans practiced a different form of christianity and most of the England disagreed with the puritans ways of thinking. In order to practice their religion in peace the left England in search of land where they could practice their religion and lead free lives. Also Massachusetts was in a good location for trading goods amongst other items.
