Henry IV began a quarrel with the Pope over the imperial right to appoint or invest churchmen with their offices. Henry begged and summoned German bishops to declare the Pope be disposed. Pope Gregory VII excommunicated Henry IV over the dispute and duty of the papacy. Both of them argued about authority.
