Why were the Grand Banks of Newfoundland important to the French?

Fish was importent to the french because lots of people there were cathlic, and ( i dont remeber what day) cathlics dont eat meat on a certain day, but they can eat fish, so thats why it was a big demand in France. I hope this helps you ! :)
