What was the historical significance of the Virginia House of Burgesses?

It was the earliest version of the government we know today.  It had representatives for election.

The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first legislative assembly in American colonies. After being part of the martial law the colonies for the first time allowed to form an assembly. George Yeardley played a significant role in the House of Burgesses. All the representative of the house were elected by the white men who own wealth and property.
