A population who doesn't understand the nature of science might start rejecting scientific knowledge. If this happens, it's very likely that people will start disregarding what scientists have to say which in turn will lead to them having less power and will lead to more people listening to religious figures etc which might deny climate change, prohibit abortion, etc.
