8/1.  5/40 is 8.  So for every 8 apples, there is 1 orange.

Answer:

the ratio of apples and oranges is 8 : 1

Explanation:

Fruit stand has 40 pounds of apple and 5 pound of oranges.

We have to calculate the ratio of apples to oranges.

ratio of apples to oranges =
\frac{\text{number of apples}}{\text{number of oranges}}

=
(40)/(5)

=
(8)/(1)

So the ratio of apples and oranges is 8 : 1
