The correct answer is that critics were horrified to learn that the government expected an eventual Communist victory. The people at pentagon knew that the warr effort was going badly and that eventually the US troups would have to pull out because they were loosing too many men and resources. The public didn't know this but when they did find out it all went bad for the government and their plans.
