In Chapter 5, Crusoe realizes that some corn kernels and rice stalks are growing near his fortress. He does not understand how this could have happened, but eventually realizes he most likely carried the crops with him. He feels extremely blessed, and decides to care for them. He demonstrates resourcefulness and patience by caring for this crops for four years before he is able to benefit from them.
