Carbon Reasons: (1) Quicklime is produced by the thermally decomposing limestone, which produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct

CaCo3 --> CaO+CO2

(2) Since this reaction requires a large amount of energy, fuel (usually coal) is burned, which produces carbon dioxide
