The word atonement is used to describe the actions in which someone tries to compensate or repair another individual or group for the wrongdoings of another individual or group. It is commonly used in conciliations between 2 parties in which the objective is to arrive at a friendly settlement between the two parts.
It also used by Christians in order to describe mankind's efforts of reconciliation with God.
