Answer:

The correct answer is D: Boris Yeltsin

Step-by-step explanation:

The August Coup, also known as the 1991 Soviet coup d´état, or August Putsch, was an incident that took place in Soviet history in which several members of the Soviet Union government, opposed to Mikhail Gorbachev´s policies of oppeness and liberalization of the Soviet Union, decided to place Gorbachev, their leader, under house arrest and take over control of the government. For a while, the Coup was effective, and the group known as the Gang of Eight, eight leaders who worked under Gorbachev, took control of power. However, on August 19 of that year, at his return to Russia from a trip to Kazakhstan, Yeltsin arrived at the White House in Moscow and issued a proclamation with which he called the citizens to rise against the GkChP, the party that was responsible for the coup and which was formed by the Gang of Eight. This proclamation resulted in a complete turnaround of the situation and the Coup failed after it. This is why the correct answer is D.
