Hirohito most likely remained head of state after the American invasion of Japan due to the emperor's role as the leader of the State Shinto religion. State Shinto combines Shinto religious traditions with the state’s institutions and it teaches it’s followers that the Japanese emperor is a divine being and thus he is more akin to a god than a simple political figure like heads of states in other countries such as the Queen of England.
