What was true about African Americans in the military?

African American soldiers in Union were not treated equally with white soldiers. African Americans troops were also assigned to low class roles or jobs such as nurses and cooks. Their roles didn't require the use of any forms of armory and combat duty. Blacks were still slaves to their masters, even in face of war or battle.
