A transform fault or transform boundary is also known as a conservative plate boundary since these boundaries neither create nor destroy lithosphere and its motion is typically horizontal. Most transform faults are located at very deep points of the ocean, however, they can also be located at the margins of tectonic plates and when located on a land mass can be particularly destructive.
