What is the formula for the general term of the arithmetic sequence 1, 5, 9, 13, …?

The formula is

a(n) = a(n-1) + 4 .

But to completely describe the sequence you've given,
these specifications also need to be stated:

a(1) = 1
and
n > 1 .
