Please provide reasons why Europeans built infrastructure in their colonies??

Essentially, a lot of of resources were transferred from the colonies to the central government, and vice versa, so the reasons would be :
- To make the access to the colonies became easier
- To increase productivity
- to win the favor of the people in the colony
