The conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA is the short step which connects glycolysis (conversion of gluocse into pyruvate) and citric acid cycle/Krebs cycle (conversion of acetyl CoA into NADH). After this oxidative phosphorylation takes place and ATP are produced.
