The 1857 Indian Uprising started as a Sepoy revolt, the Indian soldiers of the army of the British East India Company, on May 10, 1857, in the Meerut headquarters. Soon there was an escalation of the conflict with the outbreak of other riots and civil strikes along the Gangetic plain and central India.

This rebellion posed a considerable threat to the power of the British Empire throughout the region and wasn't suppressed until the fall of the kingdom of Gwalior on June 20, 1858. This uprising is also known by some Indian historians as the First Indian War of Independence.
